RCSEd today launched the International School of Surgery (ISS); an exciting new venture which brings together the College’s wide range of international activities, events, courses and exams. The ISS will work to develop and deliver new international opportunities for the College’s Fellows and Members and support them through a combination of online and locally-delivered activities, with the full engagement of the RCSEd International Surgical Advisor network.

The aim of the ISS is to offer educational support for surgeons throughout their careers, from training and beyond, by providing opportunities for continuing professional development and engagement with the College. The ISS will develop in response to the needs of our International membership and the evolution of the profession.

Speaking on the launch of the ISS, RCSEd President, Mr Ian Ritchie said:

“The Royal College of Surgeons Of Edinburgh has represented the surgical and dental workforce for over 500 years. In that time we have grown from our foundation in Edinburgh, to become a modern, international network with some 19,000 Fellows, Members and Affiliates based in almost 100 countries worldwide.

We are proud of being a truly global College and have long been dedicated to providing opportunities, support and resources to our international membership. The International School of Surgery will allow us to work even more closely with that membership and provide them with unrivalled access to all that the College can offer. ”

In January, the RCSEd welcomed publication of Professional Standards for Cosmetic Practice, by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

In a statement, RCSEd President Mr Ian Ritchie said: "The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is committed to promoting the highest standards of surgical practice. There is currently a lack of consistent professional standards in cosmetic surgical practice and we welcome these standards as a step towards addressing this situation.

"Developing better ways to measure and publish outcomes, and offering support in investigating and resolving problems, are areas in which The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is keenly interested. Indeed, we are currently in discussions with stakeholder groups to investigate how we can best support these areas."

Judy Evans, College Council Member and a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, said: "The College works closely with the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and, like them, we believe that there is a need for stricter controls in the cosmetic sector. We hope that these standards and the review currently being taken by NHS Medical Director, Sir Bruce Keogh, will help improve outcomes for patients and ensure that patients undergoing cosmetic surgery are provided routinely with the information they require to give fully-informed consent."

Delhi prepares for the MRCS OSCE
19 February 2013

delhi_webThe College has held the first of two new courses in Delhi to prepare for the first diet of the MRCS OSCE examination to be held in India.
In December, a one-day training course was held for examiners as well as a two-day course for potential candidates for this examination. The emphasis was on the format and style of the examination rather than curriculum content, to ensure examiners and candidates alike were familiar with the new format.
A team of examiners will deliver the examination in Delhi on 4 and 5 March 2013, which is being hosted by our local convener and International Surgical Advisor, Professor Pawanindra Lal.

In January, the College examinations were re-established in Yangon, Myanmar after a gap of seven years. This highly successful diet of the MRCS Part B was held at the University of Medicine 1 and at New Yangon General Hospital and was made possible by the efforts of the Rector of University of Medicine 1, Professor Than Choa and the Professor and Head of Department of Surgery at the University of Medicine 1, Professor Htun Oo. Together, they provided excellent facilities and a wide variety of clinical cases for this examination. The candidates proved to be of a high standard with pass rates comparable with our existing diets of the MRCS. This examination represents the start of a whole programme of professional support for our surgical colleagues in Myanmar.

International sponsorship scheme
19 February 2013

Consultants who would like to provide a short-term training post for a trainee from outside the UK have been asked to get in touch with the RCSEd’s International Medical Graduate Sponsorship Scheme (IMGSS).
The IMGSS was introduced in 2007 to enable overseas surgical trainees to undergo sub-specialty training in the UK. With 90 such trainees currently in the UK, successful candidates are sponsored for UK GMC registration by the College and for tier-5 visa application through the AoMRC and UK Border Agency.
The process is initiated by a UK consultant surgeon willing to act as a sponsor and trainer for a period between six months and two years. The post must be at ST3 level or above and certified by the Postgraduate Dean as having educational merit without detriment to UK trainees and must be funded by the NHS or university in accordance with UK employment regulations.
The trainer must carry out regular educational meetings with the trainee and submit progress reports to the College. The GMC carries out annual audits of the scheme.
The overseas candidate must have the MRCS or an equivalent qualification and, where English is not their first language, IELTS with a mark of seven overall and seven in each of the four sections as a minimum. They must also be supported by their overseas trainers.
The RCSEd is currently the most active Surgical College in this process and the College would be grateful if consultants who could provide such a post would contact to help place trainees who have enquired about this scheme in suitable positions.
