The professional excellence of trainees and dental care professionals (DCPs) in Wessex has been recognised in a prize day run by the College’s Dental Faculty.
Presentations of research projects, clinical audits and case reports were given by trainees and DCPs at the Wessex BDA Hospitals Group meeting in Basingstoke on 10 May.

The winning presentations were given by Atul Kusanal, an SpR in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust. His presentation ‘Can we speed up lymphoma fast tracks?’ examined how inappropriate referral and time-consuming investigations can create significant delays in diagnosis of lymphoma. Atul proposed a streamlined pathway which optimises patient care.
The SHO prize went to Reshmi Bansal, SHO in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, for her presentation ‘An audit assessing the post-operative length of stay in head and neck cancer patients managed by the Maxillofacial Department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital’. In the presentation, Reshmi examined the factors which increase length of stay, including infection, poor oral intake and social care and discussed methods for reducing the length of patient stay in hospital.
The DCP prize was awarded jointly to Anita Eastman and Claire Hutchings, two Senior Dental Nurses at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Their presentation ‘Stop before your op: Are smoking cessation brief interventions effective in day case oral surgery?’ examined whether providing a leaflet prior to surgery as well as standard pre-operative advice increased the number of patients who stopped smoking before their operation. The leaflet did not increase the percentage of patients who stopped smoking, but the audit did show that standard pre-operative advice led to 59% of patients stopping smoking pre-operatively.
