Held at the Leeds Marriott Hotel for the Yorkshire Deanery, the day was organised and hosted by RCSEd Regional Dental Adviser and Dental Council member Mr Brian Nattress, and was attended by 80 recent UK dental graduates.

This was the second of what is planned to be a more extensive UK-wide initiative of using high-calibre education to raise the Faculty’s profile amongst young professionals as they consider embarking on a lifetime of postgraduate development and choosing which College may best support them in their endeavours.

The aim was to provide an evidence-based cautionary perspective of the risks associated with cosmetic dentistry, with input from senior RCSEd Fellows with national and international reputations in their fields.

Professor Callum Youngson from the University of Liverpool presented the key elements in planning restorative treatment, as well as how to avoid common pitfalls through minimal interventions which do not compromise outcomes.

Mr David Tewson, Consultant Orthodontist from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital outlined the risks of short-term orthodontics for cosmetic general dental practitioners, in contrast to the virtues of carefully planned multi-disciplinary treatments that were slower to deliver but which gave superior long-term results.

Later, Mr Robert Chate, Vice Dean of RCSEd’s Dental Faculty, discussed the MFDS Diploma as well as the range of professional development opportunities available through the College.

Mr Alasdair McKelvie, Dental Protection Dento-legal Adviser, provided clear risk management strategies in relation to cosmetic dentistry procedures and, concluding the day, Mr Shakeel Shahdad, Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the Royal London Hospital, described the role of dental implants in contemporary clinical practice.

The success of the day was assured by the generous sponsorship support of Kerr UK, Wesleyan Financial Services and Dental Protection. The day concluded with a prize-draw, where Neha Gupta and Katherine Jones were selected for one year’s free Dental Affiliate membership.

Overall, 100% of the delegates rated the day’s proceedings as either excellent or very good and, as such, this reception provides encouragement towards the wider UK distribution of the Faculty’s Roadshow event.
